I'm slowly editing older entries. My plans are:

- website stuff will go private, because the links are dead.
- some slightly personal stuff will be access-only. I do want to start making locked entries, but I don't have a circle. I'm considering giving access to anyone who gave me access first, but I'm not active on here enough to make it yet. I plan on ordering stickers with a carrd link that includes DW as a social, but DW still is niche and my attempts at introducing people never stick lol. So a circle / access to locked posts: coming soon, I just don't know when.
-- On that note, I am considering including discussions on more fringe or "fragile" discussions under a lock, but I don't know. Most of my online life was being in manipulative groups or echo chambers ("cult" is a strong word) that punish for wrongthink, so I'm hesitant for making unpopular opinions "centric" to my identity again.
- Half of my mundane posts and to-do lists are also private. I use blogs like twitter, which is the point, but there's so much random bloat in my old posts it's like "ok, whatever".
- I haven't gotten to 2024, but bullshit about my ex will go private too. I just want to leave those 7 years I wasted behind me. One reason I want to make a circle is to have a space to unpack that. I'm not going to police degrees of separation, but I stopped talking to a lot of people because I'm disgusted they still associate with them. Granted, most people don't know how I was treated due to my ex being superficially charming lol. Oh well.

(Not to be shady, but even some public writings I otherwise think are solid have some lies in them... LOL...)

This year I'm doing Community Thursdays. Some of my activity will involve maintaining communities I run, and my favorites. Some will involve checking my list of subscriptions and posting in lower-traffic ones. Today I have interacted with the following communities...

* Posted "How to Restart When You've Fallen Off Your Goals" in [community profile] goals_on_dw.

* Continued checking and responding to Wishlist posts in [community profile] snowflake_challenge.  See my Granting Wishes post.

* Made my 3 nominations for the Rose and Bay Awards: Other Project in [community profile] crowdfunding. Nominations are still open through January, so if you haven't made yours yet, we could sure use more! Boost your favorite crowdfunded projects and patrons from 2025.

HOW TO RESTART WHEN YOU’VE FALLEN OFF YOUR GOALS

If you’ve fallen off your goals, welcome to being a real person.

It happens to everyone, including the women who look like they have it all together. The difference is not that they “never fall off.” The difference is that they restart faster.

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills "The Milky Way" square in my 1-1-25 card for the Public Domain Day Bingo fest. It has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred.

"A Scarf of Stars"

In winter,
on a moonless night,

the Milky Way shimmers
like a scarf of stars

wound around
night's black neck.

Wip Wednesday! I got prompted "surge" last week and, much to my surprise, didn't get much. I actually thought I was going to have to write up something new for this but I poked back a bit and I've not, as I thought, already clipped these excerpts for previous prompts. I almost wrote something new still, just for fun, but I was too charmed by these couple of hits having an unintended theme of sorts. So, maybe next time! For now, here are these:

Challenge #11

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.

Did this back when that challenge was posted! I'll probably go back tomorrow and see if there are any others I can fulfill but as of now, I mostly left comments on people's fics, did my daily clicks on arab.org and made a donation. I also wrote a couple of comments fics for [personal profile] alchemicink, which I am reposting below mostly so I can fix the typo I somehow managed to overlook in a frikkin drabble, lol. If I do go back and do any other creative fills, I'll probably update this post.

Anywho:

My phone finally charged, but I’m not sure what I did with its case. But I was doing laundry, and my washer isn’t spinning. Sigh. I wrung some stuff out and put it in the dryer. I’m not going to shower tomorrow because I had all this stuff to do today and I took a shower late. I looked up the error codes and it’s a drain-related issue.

Overslept and got up at 7 AM. So much for getting the car registered.

Had a dental appointment. I thought that it was for the implant but it was just a cleaning. I now have a date for the implant, 2/5. I'm planning to take a sick day that day. My boss has had an implant, and she said that was a good idea.

I almost forgot that I had piano class after work, so no jump-starting the car tonight. We worked on an simplified excerpt of Chopin's Impromptu Op.66 in C#, and I fell in love with it (although it was difficult to play). So I ordered a CD with the whole piece on it. I haven't listened much to Chopin. (My teacher gives us pieces with a range of difficulties, and I always tackle the harder ones. Maybe that's why she likes me. Or maybe it’s because I can read music.) I bought a couple of sheet music books with simplified Chopin for beginning piano players.

I booked a French lesson for next week because I should get cracking on it. (I'll be wandering around by myself in Paris.) I hope that she will teach me "tourist French". We'll see. She emphasizes speaking, which is good. I have an online French class that I need to also get cracking on. The good thing is that I remember a fair amount of it (I took French from junior high through part of college) when I review. I need to pick up Italian sometime, but one step at a time.

The BBC had an article about menengiç, which is a Turkish drink similar to coffee but made with pistachios. I ordered some to try. I love pistachios.

I need to get to bed soon because I want to try to get the car's registration taken care of, and it's already late.

What I’ve Read
Sunrise in the East by wroth_and_ruin – aka “that Hobbit/Pushing Daisies Sentinel/Guide AU crossover that nobody asked for and nobody wanted but you're getting anyway.” https://archiveofourown.org/works/1319923 – This is a fic where I really enjoyed each chapter on its own, but I feel like it did a better job setting up questions than answering them. I think the author got either bored or maybe intimidated One of the key ones is, why is Thranduil choosing Ned over an immortal life? A key element of this story is that elves are immortal, men are not, and sentinels do not outlive their guides. So, there’s a great chapter where Ned, transplanted from a world without elves, realizes the immortality that Thranduil is giving up and runs to tell him they can’t complete their bond (aka fuck) because Thranduil will literally die when Ned does. And well, instead they have a confrontation about how Thranduil is actually devastatingly horny for Ned, and the chapter ends. And yes, they do pick up the thread later, sort of, but without any of the actual weight behind it – Thranduil apologizes that Ned wasn’t told, Ned does not actually get into his concerns that he’s going to literally kill his immortal destined lover…. Like, I don’t necessarily want the trite answer that that Love Conquers Death or whatever – but I would like Ned, who lost both his parents while still a child, to point out – Thranduil would be leaving his son alone, and a king. Like. There are reasons why a person might do choose death over immortal life! But you should HAVE that conversation. Ultimately this fic, being a fanfic, works for me because it’s indulgent in several modes that I really enjoy, and I can forgive the plotty mistakes because of what it is.

What Manner of Man by St John Starling – What a fascinatingly strange book! Apparently this was written serially and with some plot points decided by polls on the author’s patreon – I think this explains some shifts in focus over the course of the book. There is much to recommend here – this book is erotica and mystery in the recovered letters and journal entries of a repressed gay Catholic priest who goes to a remote island to enact an exorcism at the request of … basically Dracula? The early book is full of sexual repression and yearning and erotic dreams that haunts and hound our dear young Father Victor Ardelian, and I really enjoyed the character’s internal tension between his sense of divine purpose and intense horniness. The first 70% of the book is great on this!

I found the ending did not live up to the promise of the early stages. Sadly, the book did not quite commit to making Creepy Island Dracula as terrible as original flavor, and the longing and the pining get wiped away as Father Ardelian undergoes a super speed conversion to secular humanism and rejects his religious up-bringing in favor of… a vampire? A strict accounting of the plot would probably make this book seem more coherent as a horror story but the erotic and religious focus of the first half of the book were most compelling to me, and they dropped off by the end of the book, where much of the plot of the book is carried forward in the point of view of characters who are perfectly nice but…, I didn’t spend a lot of time inside their minds as they unpick the tangled mess of their desires from their morals. I think this falls apart for me because the author (or perhaps the poll voters!) were not as compelled by process of slowly untwisting the knot of wanting to save the vampire’s soul from wanting to fuck him. Eh. It makes damn sense but it doesn’t compel me.

The Artist’s Way – Julie Cameron – finished it! Found it very helpful to build some self-care habits for my creative self, which has been quite good. As I stated in the past, I was doing this on Easy Mode on purpose, and I think I would like to revisit in a few months.

What I’m Reading
Catching Fire – Suzanne Collins – By god, this book is excellent to read immediately after the first one. About half of the book is just handling the fallout of the last book, and it’s awful and great.

Untamed – Anna Cowan – Came up in a Discord book group combo, I am about 10 pages in, Kit seems very rude and kind of fun, her sister’s marriage seems incomprehensible, the Duke is unclear!

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance – Foz Meadows. A re-read of a beloved book. I think that I had picked up Sunrise in the East after watching Hellboy II because I was finding the fanfic reminded me of a lot of “arranged marriage with cultural differences” fic that I had read in the Hobbit movie fandom. This book does some of that really really well, and grounds the stakes in personal relationships AND politics.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board) – CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

OK, I’d never made a Moodboard before, but had been sort of wanting to try it, so this was the perfect opportunity. I thought briefly about whether I should do a Taskmaster one, but I do feel like my colorbars from last year fill a similar niche, so I felt like I’d done it. Well, besides Taskmaster, I think it’s fair to say I have only one truly active fandom at the moment, so… Elis James & John Robins it was. And I might have gotten a little carried away XD

Challenge #11: In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.

I really like the idea of this challenge, but don’t terribly like the idea of linking to “granted wishes”, so I won’t do that part. I’ve already granted a couple of wishes when originally browsing Challenge #5, but this was my reminder to go finish commenting on another one I’d done in my head but not actually commented on. But then I went ahead and browsed the day 5 comments some more until I granted a wish I hadn’t even looked at before. I plan to continue doing that, but with that I feel like I can call the challenge “done” for the purposes of posting about it :)

Oh, right, and I should probably link to my wishlist, shouldn’t I.

The hidden microbes that decide how sourdough tastes

The microbes living in sourdough starters don’t just appear by chance—they’re shaped by what bakers feed them. New research shows that while the same hardy yeast tends to dominate sourdough starters regardless of flour type, the bacteria tell a more complex story. Different flours—like whole wheat or bread flour—encourage different bacterial communities, which can subtly influence flavor, texture, and fermentation.
