"Don't even try to make purple."
Sep. 22nd, 2019 09:12 pmAfter three disappointing seasons, it's damn nice to be excited again to watch American Horror Story. I'm Class of '84, and getting a kick out all the references in AHS:1984 first episode. I've heard everyone of those songs and even seen the videos, but not so much on MTV. Unlike now, where cable packages are all pretty much similar wherever you are in the US, back then, this new media was fragmented. What channels you got all depended on what area you were in. Even within the same city, the channels were varied. My area didn't get MTV until well after it premiered. But, there were other local video shows in LA County cashing in on "visual music" for me to watch in the meantime. My official first one was (courtesy of Richard Blade) MV3.
In my personal opinion, the local video shows were better than MTV. They would play stuff MTV wouldn't and or overlooked. I saw White Zombie on Total Request Video about a year before MTV acknowledged their existence.
Getting back on track and something got a real big kick out of: The whole gym sequence is one big nod to Jamie Lee Curtis. Everything, from the aerobics class, over-sexed Montana, Rolling Stone mention, the name of the place, etc., is all in reference to a terrible movie she did in '85 with John Travolta. Not that she's bad of course, the woman is perfect (HAHAHA - see what I did there).
There's even a music video for it: JERMAINE JACKSON - (Closest Thing To) Perfect. Be warned, it's VERY 80's.
Another thing I'm enjoying is the nods to Friday the 13th and Halloween. I'd be surprised if Mr. Jiggles (the Jason Voorhees) and Richard Ramirez (the Michael Myers) will team up. Yes, both are serial killers. But one was made a monster (already see signs of a sympathetic backstory - Nam Vet, menial job and the looks the campers in flashback were given him) and the other was born a monster. Former has a code of conduct (his killings, so far, are straight to the point and he avoided harming anyone other than the one orderly in the hospital) and is also very intelligent, he won't be easily swayed by the chaotic evil latter (who clearly enjoys inflicting fear and pain on others).
The first A Nightmare on Elm Street, Nov. 9, 1984. Freddy could make a cameo.
Last but not least. 1984 Summer Olympics, I saw the torch! Came down the street that ran along my High School. My Family home (lived in Southern CA, LA County the South Bay), was close by, walk to and from school took about 15 minutes. My parents, sister, and I were out there along with everybody else. Don't know who the guy was, Google isn't helping. But he must have been somebody worthy enough to carry the torch.
That concludes (for now) my 1984 flashback.
