The Fourth was VERY, VERY quiet. Past years, the city's public sky display would be booming away downtown right at nightfall. This year, the display got moved. I don't care if there's noise or not, but the dog does.

I remember as a kid (back in Southern CA) when neighborhoods had fireworks galore going off in residential streets. Middle of June, red&white&blue firework stands would pop up all over in empty lots and the average joe could buy everything from a little package of sparklers to big explosive assortments. Then lawmakers realized civilians blowing off body parts and causing roof fires (main culprit; bottle rockets) wasn't very patriotic and fireworks got outlawed there and in other places.

Exciting as it was to see stuff going off up close back during the 70s; adult me will pass on having neighbors playing with roman candles and cherry bombs.
