People who are Extremely Tacky Assholes
Mar. 8th, 2003 12:15 amI was earlier today planning to do a LONG nasty rant about how BEYOND INSENSITIVE PETA is with their using pictures of the Holocaust in a TASTELESS public display - they seem to WRONGLY believe that what cows go thru in a slaughter house and what an estimated 22 million people went thru in the concentration camps makes for a good comparison.
Just because I eat meat doesn't mean I'm ignorant - I know full well what goes on in slaughter houses, I also know what went on in the camps - there is NO comparison!!! But since PETA insists - the cows are lucky, what they go thru is a "walk in the park" compared to what happened to the people in those camps.
PETA says they're for "Animal Welfare", but what it looks like to me is a bunch of self-serving, trendy, tactless, narrow-minded, like to hear themselves baa, look down on others from their soapboxes, sheep!!!
*snort*
This was going to be a much longer rant - but I'm tried and need to go to bed soon.
PETA can go to the 9th Plane of Hell!!!

PETA's `Holocaust on Your Plate` campaign draws ire

Animal rights activists attracted only a few onlookers to Thursday’s downtown Reno stop on their cross-country campaign comparing livestock slaughterhouses to Nazi death camps.
But, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals managed to make at last one person mad with “The Holocaust on Your Plate” display of enlarged photographs of slaughterhouse scenes alongside pictures of Nazi concentration camps during World War II.
“This is a public park;kids walk through here,” Reno resident Jeff Ridge said, arguing with PETA organizers about one photo of naked men standing side-by-side in a death camp. “Having this up there has nothing to do with animals. That’s not a comparison.”
Jewish leaders in Nevada have spoken out against the display, saying it’s disrespectful to Holocaust victims.
“I have a hard time within my value system believing that an animal’s life is equivalent with a human’s life,” said Gary Schiff, president of Temple Emanu-El in Reno. “It’s terribly disrespectful to victims and families of victims who are still around today.”
But Matt Prescott, PETA youth outreach coordinator, defended as a fair comparison the slaughterhouse-death camp display he helped put together.
“We’re trying to show the minds that made (the Holocaust) possible made (the slaughterhouse) possible,” Prescott said. “We’re trying to show what happens to animals on factory farms. Sometimes you have to shock people.”
The display was in West Street Plaza, where Prescott and Ridge engaged in a long exchange.
“About 90 percent of the community would be shocked by this,” Ridge said. “This is gross.”
PETA officials said the eight photo panels -- 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide -- are intended to show how the victimization of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and others characterized as unworthy of life during the Holocaust, parallels the way that modern society abuses and justifies the slaughter of animals.
But the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish activist group, denounced the project and PETA’s appeal for support from the Jewish community as “outrageous, offensive and taking chutzpah to new heights.”
Viktoria Hertling, director for the Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Peace Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, criticized what she called the overuse of “holocaust” for a variety of issues not connected to the Nazis’ slaughtering of more than six million Jews.
“It is a very volatile link,” Hertling said.
At the West Street Plaza, Ridge asked Prescott, “What about your responsibility in putting this up?”
Prescott said PETA hopes the display brings attention and support to its cause.
“We have to plant seeds of compassion,” he said.
Ryan Kelley, a visitor to the display, expressed shock at the photos, but wasn’t sure about the comparison of farm animals to concentration camp victims.
“To compare chickens to these people, with families, homes and dreams,” he said, “you think how different it really is.”
