I'm from the old days of D&D when there was little if any leeway on role-playing - if you were this character had to have this alingment, this albility, roll a bunch of different shaped dice blah, blah, blah.
Besides about 1/4 of the monsters being wrong, just couldn't deal with how strictly had to follow the bloody rules - for example, the lich spends a great deal of its time at home. Yes, it practices black magic but it doesn't bother anybody. Then a bunch of smelly looking-for-a-fight uninvited treasure seekers barge into it's home - yeah I'd be evil too and cast nasty spells if that happened to me.
The lich is stuck at being labled "evil", certain colors of dragons get slapped with lables, hell everybody is slapped with labes and nothing is going to peel them off.
None too surprising I never got into the game.
Flash forward several years - new type of rpg, story style. Much more fexible than D&D and you don't have to make-up a character from scratch.
Anyway, I'd want to do a Luke Valentine character for a Hellsing RPG - in a nutshell, it's decided what better way to find out if any Millennium Group member is around than by using one of their own to sniff them out so to speak - kinda like taking the canary down in the mine, bird doesn't fight the fumes but alerts you to their presence. So Alucard coughs the guy up and since Luke's been inside of the vampire's body and "reborn" into the World guess what Alucard is his Master. This means, got to work for Hellsing Organization.
Poor Luke.
He's a broken spirit, scared of Alucard, no way of going back to the Millennium Group, surrounded by people who don't like him (was responsible for the deaths of a great many Hellsing soldiers) and his younger brother Yan is dead.
To further insure his obedience, Alucard offers a "maybe" return of Yan - so he swallows down a mixture of Yan's ashes along with several medical packets of blood (to make the cremated remains go down easier). Luke is really stuck now, if anything happens to Alucard, no Yan. If he doesn't follow orders, no Yan. All he has is a "maybe" and that's it, no telling when or if it'll be fullfilled.
There are a few brightspots - Alucard mentions he added a few minor adjustments to Luke, but what they are well Luke will have to find out for himself. Seras, feeling sorry for Luke and understanding to some extent what it feels like to be an outcast and left to your own devices, becomes a much needed friend to him. He in turn treats her not as a little girl, a monster or a sex toy but an equal - Seras likes this and it doesn't hurt that it's coming from a very attractive male vampire. Both feel they can trust the other and become very close.
Pip, seeing Luke as a potential rival for Seras, decides it's best to get on friendly terms with the guy (the better to keep close tabs on Luke when with Seras)- and thus also becomes a friend although not as close as Seras.
About it what I got, someday maybe I'll use it.
