As anybody who bothers to read my LJ knows, I like Hellsing doujinshis and buy them off of eBay.
Currently, I got 6 bids going. I check the Hellsing doujinshi section almost daily, only bid on ones I find interesting/appealing and then purposely place a high bid in order to get them.
Am willing to pay a high price (and have sometimes) because it is something I REALLY want - screw doing a couple bucks over the asking price, I'll go $20-40-50 depending on what it is. Also am usually the first bidder, rarely will bid on one already bidded on by somebody else - it's a sense of fairplay. The only time I've done otherwise was because it was a yaoi I REALLY wanted.
One doujinshi the asking price was $9.95, I plunked down $55 because again I REALLY want it.
Up until today, was the sole bidder. I check in as usual and there is a total of 6 bids and the asking price had jumped to $20something.
First bidders get the advantage over all other bidders so long as that first bid is beyond what other bidders are plunking down.
Anyway back to my story, this was of course odd, and had the feeling it was one person doing multiple little bids.
It was and you'd think after a couple of tries the guy would realize "Hey, maybe I shouldn't be doing 1-2 dollar amounts but one big sum." or "Maybe I should give-up, that person is a deadset on getting this particular doujinshi."
Well after shaking my head at it all, check my email and there's this message from that guy - do you really want this Doujinshi so bad? i could stop biddin if you like. just let me know.
Talk about not getting a subtle hint when applied with a sledgehammer!!! He's already tried FIVE TIMES and failed, why is this so bloody hard to understand???!!!
Probably won't reply back to the guy, because WHAT'S THE POINT???!!!

Date: Dec. 18th, 2004 08:51 pm (UTC)But most places don't carry the title or if they do it's usually a very small selection of non-sexual or mostly hentai. So I got no choice but eBay.
I learned early on to place high bids because of the "De-jerk" who would purposely come in on a bid at the very last minute and take it from me and others. That person did it on purpose for the thrill of taking stuff away from people until the day I gave him a MAJOR ballbusting (I put a high bid $50 on a $5 doujinshi for the sole purpose of teaching that asshole a very expensive lesson not to screw with people and it worked - has since then quit with the rudeness and has been respectful towards other bidders).
Not all my bids are high, some are reasonable to some extent - if it's something I want but not that much, if somebody wants it more and does a higher bid I won't challenge it.
I do keep an eye on the bids during the final moments, usually I don't have any problems getting what I wanted.

Date: Dec. 18th, 2004 09:28 pm (UTC)I never, ever come in at that last minute and superbid though.
However, I'd prefer being able to buy them on non-auction sites too. I like couples hentai mostly, and I used to like dokidokistation for that, but I don't know any other sites like that.
I did once get in an (admittedly stupid) bidding war over a rare Pokemon plush toy, but usually I just set my maximum (similar to yours, it sounds like) depending on how badly I want it, though I occasionally re-reevaluate if I'm outbid, it's usually just once.
But as for this specific guy, I have no idea what he's up to. He should just put in his own maximum, and if he feels bad that you may want it badly, he doesn't have to bid at all. E-mailing you seems weird to me too.

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

It's been like that ever since and I have no idea why or how to fix it.

Date: Dec. 19th, 2004 08:10 pm (UTC)Maybe it was closed to the public - leaving the business?
But should have put up something than a 403 page, that's tacky.
